How long does lip filler last & how to keep it fresh

Durations, aftercare & touch-ups

Most lip fillers hold for six months to a year. The gel you choose and how you treat your lips in the first two weeks help decide where you land.

A woman with long dark curly hair and softly full lips smiles gently in a warmly lit room.

Most lip fillers hold for six months to a year, and the product in the syringe sets much of that range. Each lip filler earns FDA approval on its own clinical trial, so a soft Juvederm gel made for subtle shaping and a Restylane gel made for volume come with different duration data.

The rest is up to your body and your habits. Metabolism, the amount injected, how much your lips move and what you do in the first two weeks all shift the timeline. Below is what each filler family offered at 4Ever Young showed in its trials, followed by the steps that help a result stay fresh for as long as the gel allows.

What you need before a lip filler appointment

A natural lip filler result starts at the consultation, before any product is chosen. The FDA patient labeling for Juvederm Volbella XC asks you to tell your provider about aspirin, ibuprofen or any other blood thinner, since these can increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Mention cold sores too: published reviews link lip injections to flare-ups, and your provider may suggest an antiviral first. 4Ever Young’s guide on what to expect from lip fillers walks through numbing, injection and the first hour after.

Bring these with you:

  • Two or three goal photos
  • Your medication list
  • Supplements you take
  • Any cold sore history
  • Dates of past filler
  • Two calm weeks on the calendar

How long lip filler lasts by filler type

The most reliable answer to how long does lip filler last comes from each product’s pivotal trial, where an evaluator rated lip fullness against a photo scale at set visits. In these studies a responder is a patient whose lips still looked at least one grade fuller than before treatment. Every product below is a gel of crosslinked hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule the skin already makes and slowly breaks down. The entry on hyaluronic acid on Wikipedia covers the chemistry.

Trial numbers describe groups. Your own result can run shorter or longer.

Juvederm lip filler

Two Juvederm lip filler gels are FDA approved for the lips. Juvederm Ultra XC added lip augmentation on September 30, 2015. In its trial, 79% of patients had fuller lips at 3 months and 56% still did at 1 year, which is why its labeling says it lasts up to a year in most patients.

Juvederm Volbella XC, approved for lips and the fine lines around the mouth on May 31, 2016, uses a lower hyaluronic acid concentration (15 mg/mL) for a softer, more subtle fill. At 1 year, 62% of Volbella patients still had fuller lips and 66% kept their improvement in lip lines. Both gels contain lidocaine. 4Ever Young offers the wider family too, so Juvederm filler treatments can be matched to shape, volume or smoother lines.

Restylane lip filler

Restylane lip filler comes in three lip-approved versions with different track records. Restylane Kysse, approved on March 26, 2020 for lip augmentation and upper lip lines, held its effect the longest: 88% of patients had fuller lips 8 weeks after their last injection, 77% at 24 weeks and 60% at 48 weeks, the study’s final visit.

Restylane Silk, a finer gel approved on June 13, 2014, was studied for 6 months, and 59% of patients were still responders at that point. Restylane-L gained its lip indication on August 30, 2012. In the Restylane lip study behind it, 70% of patients still showed fuller lips at 24 weeks. If longevity is your priority, ask about Kysse. If you want a light touch for fine lines, Silk is built for that. Restylane filler options at 4Ever Young cover lips, cheeks, smile lines and the jawline.

Versa lip filler

Revanesse Versa is FDA approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as smile lines, first under the name Revanesse Ultra in August 2017. The Revanesse product approved specifically for the lips is Revanesse Lips+, approved on September 21, 2020 for lip augmentation in adults 22 and older. In the Lips+ trial, 91% of patients had fuller lips at 2 months. At 6 months, the last scheduled visit, 65% still rated their lips much or very much improved.

That distinction matters when you compare versa lip filler with Juvederm or Restylane: Versa in the lips is an off-label use, while Lips+, which has the same formulation as Versa+ (Versa with lidocaine), carries the lip indication. Ask your injector which Revanesse gel they plan to use and why. 4Ever Young’s page on Versa lip filler explains how the gel is used for lips, smile lines and contour.

Steps to keep lip filler looking fresh

Lip filler before and after photos are how most people judge a result, yet the after picture keeps changing for about two weeks. The lip filler healing process moves from swelling to settling to a softer final shape, and three habits protect it.

Step 1 of 3

Follow lip filler aftercare for two weeks

The first 24 hours have the firmest rules. FDA patient labeling for Juvederm Ultra XC and Volbella XC asks you to minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to extensive sun or heat during that window, because each can increase temporary redness, swelling or itching.

After day one, good lip filler aftercare is mostly restraint. A cold compress in short sessions helps on the first day. Sleeping on your back for a few nights keeps pressure off your lips. Leave them alone otherwise: no pressing, pinching or massaging unless your provider asks you to, since the gel is still settling into place.

Step 2 of 3

Plan touch-ups before volume fades

Volume fades gradually rather than overnight, as the Kysse numbers above show, with fewer patients counted as responders at each visit. Booking a maintenance visit while some fullness remains lets your provider refine a shape you already like instead of rebuilding it from scratch.

Many patients return somewhere between 6 and 12 months, depending on the gel and how quickly their own lips soften. The trials also allowed a touch-up within about a month of the first session, which is a sensible point to fine-tune symmetry. If you treat on a schedule, the 4Ever Reserve tier of the 4Ever Young membership adds $99 a month to a personal service bank you can put toward maintenance visits.

Step 3 of 3

Limit heat, sun & hard workouts early

Heat and hard exercise push more blood to the face. In the first day or two, that can make swelling, redness and bruising more noticeable, so a hot yoga class, a sauna or a long run in the sun can wait until your lips have calmed down.

Once you are healed, daily SPF lip balm protects the thin skin that frames your result.

Mistakes that shorten results & cause lip filler migration

Lip filler migration means gel that has spread beyond the area where it was placed, most often above the upper lip border, where it can blur the edge or leave a puffy shelf. Researchers are still measuring how often it happens. A 2023 review of published lip filler complications listed migration alongside nodules and cold sore flares, and a 2026 ultrasound study of 126 people found that the fat layer in the lips averages less than 1 mm, so filler often ends up inside the muscle. In that study, vertical injection angles were linked to deeper placement and signs of migration.

Technique and restraint prevent most problems. These are the habits that work against a result:

  • Asking for a lot of volume in one visit. The lip has little room for gel, and building gradually gives a more natural shape.
  • Choosing an injector on price alone. Placement depth and needle direction shape where the gel ends up, so training and experience count.
  • Topping up on a fixed calendar. A provider should look at how much fullness remains before adding more.
  • Pressing, massaging or sleeping face down in the first days, while the gel is still settling.
  • Skipping the product question. Juvederm, Restylane and Revanesse gels differ in firmness and in which uses are on their labels.

If migration does happen, hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, an off-label use of that drug, and a skilled injector can rebuild the border afterward.

Questions Patients Ask

Lip filler FAQ

01

What Are the Lip Filler Swelling Stages?

Most people move through three lip filler swelling stages. Days 1 to 3 bring the most swelling and tenderness, sometimes with bruising. From about day 4 to day 7 the swelling eases, and lips can feel slightly firm or uneven. By around two weeks the gel has settled into its final shape. In the Juvederm Volbella XC trial, swelling was gone within 14 days for 94.5% of the patients who had it.

02

Does Lip Filler Hurt?

Does lip filler hurt? Most people describe pressure and a brief sting rather than real pain. Juvederm Ultra XC, Volbella XC, Restylane Kysse and Revanesse Lips+ all contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine, and a topical numbing cream is usually applied first. In the Restylane Kysse trial, 86% of patients who reported tenderness rated it tolerable.

03

How Long Does Lip Filler Swelling Last?

How long does lip filler swelling last? For most people, days rather than weeks. In the Restylane Kysse trial, 59% of patients with swelling were clear within 7 days and 87% within 14 days, while 13% had some swelling for 15 to 30 days. Swelling that gets worse after the first few days, or comes with pain or a color change, is a reason to call your center.
