Botox Cosmetic and Dysport relax the same muscles with the same type of protein, and most patients would be happy with either one. Where they differ is narrow but real. The units are measured differently, the gel spreads differently once injected, and the published onset data lean toward Dysport while the approved treatment areas lean toward Botox. 4Ever Young providers inject both, so the recommendation you get at a consultation follows your face.

Botox vs Dysport verdict for most patients

For most patients the honest answer to Botox vs Dysport is that both work, and the deciding factors are the area being treated and how quickly you want to see movement soften. Botox Cosmetic is the better fit when you want the broadest list of FDA-approved cosmetic areas and a product that stays close to where it is placed. If frown lines are the target and a faster start matters to you, Dysport is the better fit.

A 4Ever Young provider decides the product, the dose and the injection pattern together, which is why Botox treatment at 4Ever Young starts with a consultation.

Both labels put the re-treatment floor at the same place: not more often than every 3 months.

One row deserves a second look: the onset figures come from a 20-subject study in which each person received both products on opposite sides of the forehead, so the difference is real but the sample is small.

How Botox & Dysport compare side by side

Manufacturing is where the difference between Botox and Dysport begins. Each is made from the botulinum toxin type A protein, which blocks the signal that tells a muscle to contract, and the Botulinum toxin overview covers the chemistry. What differs is the size of the protein complex, the inactive ingredients around it and the potency assay each manufacturer uses to define a unit.

So is Dysport the same as Botox? Same mechanism, same muscle targets, different product.

Spread through the treated muscle

Dysport has a reputation for diffusing farther from the needle, and the evidence is split. A forehead sweating study of 20 patients found a larger area of effect with Dysport in 93 percent of side-by-side comparisons at dose ratios from 2.5 to 1 up to 4 to 1. Injecting the same volume at a 2.5 to 1 ratio and a controlled depth, a second study of 18 volunteers found no difference in the size of the treated halo.

Technique matters as much as the product.

Injected at the same volume and depth, the two behave alike. Diluted differently or placed shallower, Dysport can cover more ground, which helps across a broad forehead and is a liability next to the brow or the eyelid. For a fuller account of how the product acts on expression lines, see How Dysport works on wrinkles.

Onset of visible results

How long does Dysport take to work? In the split-forehead study above, Dysport reached a median initial onset at 12 hours and complete onset at 3 days, against 48 hours and 5 days for Botox, while a larger randomized trial of 180 people found no meaningful gap, with onset at 5.3 days for both products in women.

Each label tells a similar story in its own terms. By day 7, 74 percent of treated subjects in the Botox Cosmetic frown line trials had none or mild lines, and the Dysport frown line trial put 90 percent at that mark at its first measurement on day 14. Expect either product to be working within the first week and settled by week two.

How long results last

Both labels land in the same place: Botox Cosmetic reduced frown line severity for up to 120 days in its pivotal studies, and Dysport reduced it for up to four months in its three trials. Head to head, the small frontalis study measured complete efficacy at 72 days for Dysport and 56 days for Botox. Full efficacy came at 103 days against 87. How long your own cycle runs depends on muscle strength, dose and how often you treat, and How often to get Botox walks through that schedule.

Dosing units & cost per area

Behind the Dysport vs Botox units question sits a simple fact: each company measures potency with its own assay, so a Dysport unit is a smaller amount of activity than a Botox unit. Labeled frown line doses are 20 Units of Botox Cosmetic and 50 Units of Dysport, both delivered across five injection points. There is no official Botox to Dysport conversion. A 2009 review found ratios from 2 to 1 up to 4 to 1 in the literature and recommended staying under 3 to 1, and 2.5 to 1 is the ratio used in the comparative studies cited here. Neither label treats the units as interchangeable, so your provider plans in each product’s own units.

On cost, the per-unit price of Dysport is lower and the unit count is higher, so the price per area tends to land close. Per-unit pricing varies by center, and the membership carries discounts on both Botox and Dysport. Since the dose follows your muscles, the quote follows the consultation.

Who should choose Botox or Dysport

Dysport injections make the most sense when the frown lines between your brows are the main complaint and you want the earliest visible change.

  • Frown lines need to soften before an event in the next week.
  • Your forehead is broad enough that a slightly wider field of effect is an advantage, understanding that forehead and crow’s feet treatment with Dysport is off-label in the United States.
  • You are under 65, which is the age range on the Dysport label.
  • Past Botox injections felt uncomfortable. In the split-forehead study, 80 percent of subjects rated Dysport as the less painful side.

Botox Cosmetic makes the most sense when precision is the priority or the area is one Dysport is not approved for. Dysport injections at 4Ever Young and Botox share the same medical team, so switching later means a conversation with the same providers.

  • Crow’s feet, forehead lines or neck bands are on your list and you want them treated on-label, indications Botox Cosmetic added in 2013, 2017 and 2024.
  • Small or sensitive zones such as bunny lines, a gummy smile or the masseter are the target. Those are off-label for both products and reward a product that stays put.
  • You are 65 or older.
  • Cow’s milk protein allergy is a contraindication on the Dysport label.

If you are still deciding between Botox or Dysport after reading that list, you are a candidate for either.

Bottom line on choosing a neurotoxin

Pick the area first and the product second. Frown lines with a deadline point toward Dysport. Multiple areas, delicate zones or a patient over 65 point toward Botox Cosmetic.

Which product you get is the smaller decision. Your injector reads your muscles, sets the dose in the right units and places it at the right depth, and that work decides if you look rested or frozen. One consultation at a 4Ever Young center settles it.

FAQ

Botox vs Dysport questions patients ask

01

Is Dysport Better Than Botox?

Neither is better across the board. For frown lines on a deadline, is Dysport better than Botox? On the onset data, yes: a median initial onset of 12 hours against 48 in a split-forehead study. Where crow’s feet, forehead lines or neck bands need on-label treatment, or precision near the brow matters most, Botox Cosmetic is the better choice. Both are FDA approved for frown lines and both are offered at 4Ever Young.

02

Does Dysport Last Longer Than Botox?

Does Dysport last longer than Botox? By the labels, no: Botox Cosmetic reports up to 120 days, Dysport reports up to four months, and both set re-treatment at no more than every 3 months. One 20-person study measured complete efficacy at 72 days for Dysport and 56 days for Botox at a 2.5 to 1 ratio, so Dysport may hold a small edge, but individual muscle strength and dose matter more.

03

Is Dysport Cheaper Than Botox?

Is Dysport cheaper than Botox per unit? Usually yes. Per area, the Botox vs Dysport gap narrows because a frown line treatment uses 50 Units of Dysport against 20 Units of Botox Cosmetic. Per-unit pricing varies by center, and members receive discounts on both products. Your consultation quote reflects the dose your muscles need.
