The Big 3: Botox vs. Dysport vs. Jeuveau, What’s the Difference?

If you’ve started researching injectables for fine lines and wrinkles, you’ve likely come across three names again and again: Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau. All three belong to the same general category of treatment, but patients often want to understand what actually separates them before deciding which one might make sense for their goals.

What They Have in Common

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau are all forms of botulinum toxin type A, and all three work by temporarily relaxing the targeted facial muscles responsible for expression lines, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines between the brows. None of the three are permanent, and all require repeat treatments to maintain results over time.

How They Differ

The differences between these three come down to formulation details rather than dramatically different outcomes. Each product is manufactured slightly differently, which can affect factors like dosing units, how the product diffuses within the treated area, and how quickly some patients notice results.

Botox has been available the longest and is often the product patients have heard of even before researching injectables. Dysport tends to spread slightly more within the treated area, which is part of why some providers prefer it for larger areas like the forehead, and some patients report a somewhat faster onset. Jeuveau is a newer entrant to the category, developed specifically for cosmetic use, and some patients and providers describe a smoother injection experience, though individual response varies.

Why Individual Response Varies So Much

It’s worth being clear that no single product works identically for every patient. Facial muscle strength, metabolism, the specific area being treated, and even how consistently someone has been treated in the past can all affect how a given product performs for that individual. This is one of the reasons a consultation matters more than picking a product based on advertising alone.

How Providers Decide Which to Recommend

During a consultation, your provider will typically assess your treatment area, discuss what you’re hoping to achieve, and factor in anything relevant from your history with injectables, if you have any. Someone who has tried Botox in the past without the results they wanted might be a good candidate to try Dysport or Jeuveau instead, since a different formulation sometimes performs differently for the same individual.

Setting Realistic Expectations

Regardless of which product you and your provider choose, results are not guaranteed and typically last three to four months before requiring a follow up treatment. Mild redness or swelling at the injection site is common with all three and generally resolves quickly. Your provider will walk you through what to expect specific to the product recommended for you.
