Why Do I Get Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that affects up to 50 million Americans. Even though it’s so common, we still need to learn how to treat it effectively.

Most people do not realize that there are different types of acne and different factors that cause acne. Keeping these things in mind can help you treat and prevent acne effectively.

Causes of Acne

Acne is an inflammatory skin problem caused by one or more of the following:

  • Clogged pores due to buildup of dirt, oil, or dead skin cells
  • Excessive oil production caused by hormone fluctuations
  • Bacterial infection that causes inflammation

There are different types of acne: comedones (whiteheads and blackheads), papules, pustules (inflamed papules with pus), nodules, and cysts (pus-filled and usually cause scars).

Various factors, including dead skin cells, excess oil, hormone changes, stress, or poor nutrition/diet, can cause acne. We at 4Ever Young in Scottsdale can assist you in accurately diagnosing your acne and providing you with the treatment that suits your needs.

Tips to Get Clearer Skin

Discover effective ways to combat acne and achieve clear, radiant skin.

  1. Wash your face every day.

In order to keep your skin healthy, it’s important to wash it regularly. It’s recommended to wash your face twice a day (once in the morning and once before going to bed). By doing so, you will remove surface oils and dead skin cells that can clog your pores. It also reduces inflammation and kills acne-causing bacteria.

However, if you wash your skin too often, your skin will become too dry, or your acne will worsen. Make sure to use appropriate cleansers for your skin type and condition.

  2. Wash your face after sweating.

Our daily activities can make us sweaty at times. However, sweat creates a warm and wet environment suitable for growing acne-causing bacteria. The combination of sweat, oil, and germs is a recipe for acne.

Whether you’ve worked out hard or spent the day somewhere hot, remember to wash your face (or just take a shower) as soon as possible to prevent acne breakouts.

  3. Avoid hot showers.

After a long day out, taking a hot shower or washing your face with hot water may seem relaxing. However, hot showers won’t help your skin.

Hot showers strip your skin of natural oils and the “good bacteria.” It can also dry out your skin, triggering an increase in oil production. Dry skin hampers the skin barrier and is more prone to skin conditions. All these can help acne-causing bacteria to thrive, which we do not want.

  4. When necessary, use benzoyl peroxide.

You probably heard of benzoyl peroxide when you had your first pimples. Benzoyl peroxide is a popular FDA-approved treatment because it effectively kills acne-causing bacteria. It also removes excess oil from the skin and reduces dead skin cell buildup. Try benzoyl peroxide, which is available in different forms, such as topical acne treatment and facial and body wash.

  5. Exfoliate regularly.

When you exfoliate regularly, you prevent your pores from becoming clogged with dead skin cells and sebum, which can lead to breakouts. Exfoliation also results in smoother and softer skin, revealing fresh new skin under a layer of dead skin cells.

However, avoid exfoliating too much (2 to 3 times a week is enough) and avoid exfoliating brushes. Since the exfoliation causes inflammation and acne bumps, these can worsen acne.

  6. Use skin care products that won’t clog your pores.

It’s important to use hydrating toners, moisturizers, and sunscreen products; however, ensure that these won’t further clog your pores. Keep your pores clog-free (and acne-free) using skincare products labeled as non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.

  7. Eat a healthy diet.

While there is no scientific proof that chocolate and greasy foods aggravate acne, there is evidence showing that diet plays a role in acne and its treatment. According to a published study, consuming less sugars and carbohydrates results in fewer acne breakouts.

Keep a food diary to determine if a specific food triggers your breakouts. It’s always a good idea to eat a healthy diet, not just to help your skin stay clear but also for overall health.
